The word gospel comes from the Old English god meaning "good" and spel meaning "news" The term "good news" refers to God's plan of salvation for fallen men, through His Son, Jesus Christ.
GOD IS HOLY
Man is humbled and each one is brought low, and the eyes of the haughty are brought low. But the LORD of hosts is exalted in justice, and the Holy God shows Himself Holy in righteousness.
For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.
MAN IS NOT HOLY
As it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one…For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
Romans 3:10, 23
Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.
This reality leaves mankind with a great dilemma that he is not able to fix on his own. God’s holiness requires justice. The bible says of God; “You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong” (Habakkuk 1:13). Sin will be punished. Humanity will not escape God’s righteous judgments.
Sin severs us from a Holy God.
I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.
For the wages of sin is death
Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished.
GOD'S PLAN OF SALVATION
While maintaining His Holiness and justice, the Bible also affirms that God Is Love and that in Love He has responded to the dilemma of man.
...Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, He was buried, He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
GOD'S PLAN OF SALVATION :
MOTIVATED BY LOVE
God is love. In this, the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation* for our sins.
1 John 4:8-10
*a propitiation is a sacrifice that satisfies God’s wrath
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, (9) not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (10) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
THE CROSS OF CHRIST
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person--though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die–but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST
It will be counted to us who believe in Him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
The resurrection of Jesus witnesses to the immense power of God Himself. To believe in the resurrection is to believe in God. If God exists, and if He created the universe and has power over it, He has the power to raise the dead. Only He who created life can resurrect it after death, only He can reverse the dreadfulness that is death itself, and only He can remove the sting that is death [1 Corinthians 15:54-55]. The grave could not hold Him. He lives, and He sits today at the right hand of God the Father in heaven.
For he must reign until He has put all his enemies under His feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
1 Corinthians 15:25-26
Repentance is a saving grace, whereby a sinner, out of a true sense of his sin, does with grief and hatred of his sin, turn from it to God, with full determination to strive after new obedience.
But if a wicked person turns away from all his sins that he has committed and keeps all my statutes and does what is just and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die.
Repent, therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,
Outward sincerity and confession are not enough. It must be accompanied by a turning away from sin. A sincere acknowledgment of our sinfulness leads to genuine sorrow, shame and even hatred for the sins we have committed against God. Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace, whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is offered to us in the gospel. To have faith in Jesus means to trust Him. Simply. Fully. Without reservation.
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen… and without faith, it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:1&6
